Austen and Kevin started to work on Talkatu in the Summer of 2007 after being frustrated with the inadequate and way too expensive communication devices currently available to help people, especially kids with special needs, communicate. A few months of soul-searching and brainstorming later, they decided to build an online community to enable parents and caregivers to produce their own communication software for commodity devices—Talkatu!

Austen received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University in Spring 2008 and his B.S. from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2003.

He is a dedicated volunteer at E-Soccer, the SF Bay Area's inclusive soccer program for typical and special needs kids. He also enjoys chess, salsa dancing, and rock climbing.
